A refreshing alternative to the significant number of middle grade titles focused on dysfunctional families and weighty societal issues, Crunch by Leslie Connor is a story which highlights positive family and community bonds while weaving mystery and humor into the tale. Fourteen year-old Dewey Marriss's long haul trucker father and his mom are stranded miles from home when a nationwide gas shortage occurs so Dewey, his older sister Lil, thirteen year-old brother Vince and five year-old twins Angus and Eva work together to keep the home fires burning with the help of friends and neighbors. The family's backyard bicycle repair business is suddenly overwhelmed with customers now desperate to use their bikes to get around. When badly needed bicycle parts begin to disappear from the shop, however, the Marriss boys must find the culprit or see their shop go belly-up. This book is a great choice for grades 4-6 book clubs and classroom reads. One of my very favorites!
