When their grandmother dies, 12 year old William, 11 year old Edmund, and 9 year old Anna are left in London in the care of an elderly housekeeper. As part of the World War II evacuation of children to safety, however, they are soon relocated to the countryside, something that the family solicitor hopes will lead to their finding adoptive parents. Unfortunately, the children are placed with the Forresters, an unpleasant family with two sons who relentlessly bully the new arrivals. Constantly harassed by these boys, fearful of the possibility of a German attack, and aware of the ever-present possibility of homelessness and separation, the children find comfort in the village lending library, a cozy shelter from the harshness of everyday life. They wonder if Nora Muller, the kind librarian, may be the family they have been searching for but the shadow of war and the unknown whereabouts of Nora’s German husband complicate matters. This story about the importance of family, both the one you’re given and the one you choose, is perfect for fans of The War That Saved My Life and Good Night, Mr. Tom.
