Living in California as a first-generation Mexican American, Pedro Martin struggles to find his place. As an American kid growing up in the 1970s, he loves Star Wars and Happy Days but dislikes the way his five oldest siblings, who were born in Mexico, make him feel less Mexican just because he and the three other younger siblings were born after their parents immigrated to the United States. Pedro has grown up hearing stories about his abuelito, the legendary, crime-fighting grandfather who was once a part of the Mexican Revolution. When he learns that this man will be moving from Mexico to live with the Martins, Pedro is excited about the opportunity to get in touch with his roots, learn more about the place his family calls home, and get to know his larger-than-life grandfather. Having to make the 2000 mile trip in a crowded RV with his family to pick up his abuelito, however, may be quite the challenge! Along the way, Pedro and his family have unexpected encounters with elements of their Mexican culture, a trip filled with laughs and heartache. In this high energy graphic novel, the Spanish language is regularly featured, both with and without translation. A perfect coming-of-age story for readers of all backgrounds.
