Sixth grader Emma adores her older brother and star quarterback Austin, the “guy everyone paid attention to when he walked into a room”. When she follows his suggestion that she check out the school art club in spite of her best friend Becca’s discouragement, she is delighted to meet new friends who seem to have much more in common with her than the bookish Becca. But things are changing for Austin too. After undergoing surgery for a football injury, Austin has a slow recovery and becomes dependent on painkillers to make it through the day. At the end of the school year, Emma’s parents decide that their son needs inpatient rehab for his addiction and Emma needs a break from the family trauma as well. Being sent from Boston to stay with family friends in Wyoming for the summer, Emma seizes the chance to get away from the friendship problems of the past year. Wyoming turns out to be a perfect fresh start, especially after Emma makes friends with Tyler, a boy who seems to have a kindred spirit and is dealing with family trauma of his own. Neither, however, can hide from their troubles forever but can’t make them go away either. Can they each find a way to confront their truths and move forward?
